Umkhumbi is situated south of the Umsunduze river
in the controlled hunting area of Mkhuze game reserve.
Spread along the shore of a large pan in Terminalia sandvelt under
stretching Acacia berkii trees, the camp consists of four large,
fully equiped and furnished safari tents. Each tent sleeps two and
has an en-suite bathroom. The thatched, wood and reed living area
consists of a dining area, lounge and bar looking out over the pan.
Visitors to this private and tranquil piece of the african bush
can enjoy the area reserved for their exclusive use or go walking
elsewhere in Mkhuze. They can also visit one of the three excellent
hides to watch the constant procession of wild animals coming down
to the water holes for their daily drink. Tasty meals are prepared
by the camp cook and an attendant services the camp daily. A field
ranger is available to take guests for game viewing walks in the
bush. Visiters must bring all their food and drink requirements
with them though limited supplies can be bought at the camp shop
at Mantuma. Mkhuze is a malaria area so suitable precautions must
be taken. Birding, game viewing and sitting quietly in the three
game viewing hides are the most popular activities in Mkhuze. Night
drives, guided walks, the auto trail, camping, caravanning and swimming
are also available. The reserve has 100 kilometers of tourist roads
for game viewing. Guided night drives are undertaken weather permitting.
Guided game walks can be booked at the camp office and these take
place twice daily starting at 06h00 in summer, and 15h00 in winter.
Birding in Mkhuze offers some of the best birding opportunities
in South Africa and with a bird list of 420 species is excellent
all year round. Guided birding walks may be booked at the camp office,
